Pond Consultation & Management

Pond Consultation & Management

The District offers a pond planning consultation for Chautauqua County residents who are interested in constructing a pond for wildlife, recreational and/or fire protection uses. This service assists potential pond owners in the evaluation, layout and design of ponds. Pond management advice is also available to landowners with existing ponds.

If you are having an issue with aquatic vegetation in your pond,  we suggest printing the Pond Weed Identifier that is provided below in color to compare to the vegetation in your pond.

Did you know that Chautauqua County Soil & Water Conservation District is an approved New York State Triploid Grass Carp Supplier?  Triploid Grass Carp are often used to control the overgrowth of aquatic vegetation. Please read the article that is provided below titled “Stocking Triploid Grass Carp to Control Aquatic Vegetation in New York Waters”. Chautauqua County Soil & Water Conservation District also sells Barley Straw Pond Kits to pond owners for algae management. Please read the Barley Straw Handout that is provided below if you are having an issue with algae. Barley Straw Kits should be applied to the pond as soon as the ice leaves the pond in the early spring to be most effective.

Please email all pond related questions to Chaut-Co@soilwater.org. Take notice that our office is currently closed to the public.
